A petite mess of style and substance. A Melbourne writer. A controversial bitch daring you to see our world differently.

Shells Painted

snake skin

engraved

eggshells

in an image

of an image

containing them

pale pink

like the unscreened

bottom of a baby

peachy

but more pink

than that

lines

similar

to a fine

felt-tipped

pen

ink dripped

yet

not at all

blotchy

drawn

from a hand

steady

still

in the stream

of beauty

captured

in the dregs

of wasted

yolks

and

translucent mush

dried

staining perfection

and

tracing time

as if

it were only

a word

used to distract

an artist

from its muse

shells

in a shell

suspended

in another

too clever

i trace my finger

across the paper

skin

on

skin

on

the surface

of one

once

the cover

of a creature

undeveloped

fitting

to sketch life

into the

displaced

oval space

where it had

already lived.
